Once upon a time, I was in an airport. I was hungry in said airport (why? because I'm ALWAYS hungry, that's why). So, I stopped in a charming little Hudson News boutique planning to buy a Luna bar.
"Planning to" are the operative words here because when I approached the checkout counter the clerk informed me that the bar was $3.95. Yes, four dollars for a granola bar. Honestly, does anyone like Luna bars that much?
Now that I am working from home I have developed a pretty bad habit. Yes, I shower and no, I don't work on my couch in my underwear while eating ice cream.
Don't worry. I won't leave you with that charming mental picture. I'll tell you what my bad habit actually is. Although, the aforementioned will be hard to follow.
I digress.
In the mornings, I've developed the habit of watching The Today Show, to get the news, to learn what's going on in the world, you know. Productive television watching. But then, at 10am, I flip to Rachael Ray. And I mute the TV. (Okay...maybe that's not such a bad habit...but it's wasted electricity).
I do a lot of cooking that doesn't wind up on this blog. I make a lot of salads, sandwiches, pasta creations, omelets --and more-- that doesn't work its way onto the internet.
Partially because I tend to eat dinner on the later side and I don't always write down recipes when I cook - but partially because I typically only cook for me and why bother with a recipe for one?
Well, maybe some of you would make recipes for one: you're single, you live alone...maybe your kids and husband are the pickiest eaters on the planet so you make separate meals. Or maybe you're just selfish. Every man for himself.
I'm kidding about the selfish part.
But not about the 'recipes for one' part.

Fact: it is not difficult to make risotto. It's not even difficult to make good risotto. While it doesn't require a significant amount of kitchen skill, risotto does call for patience. When making risotto you have to stand over it, stirring for at least 20 minutes. To make a good risotto, use Arborio rice. Arborio grains are short, stubby and high in protein, which lends to a creamy consistency.
There are a number of French toast and bread pudding recipes out there that, while I'm sure are delicious, don't excite me. French toast, as most people know it, is bread soaked in an egg mixture rich with milk, spiked with cinnamon and nutmeg toasted in a hot frying pan. On the other hand, bread pudding is more like a baked bread custard: bite-sized bread cubes soaked in a rich mixture of cream, eggs, sugar and sometimes butter. Yes, usually butter.
